A

BOUT A BOOKISH DELIGHT

Every author knows the importance of having another person read over their manuscript and provide constructive criticism to help them make their novel shine.  A good critique should not only offer suggestions and improvements where needed but also encourage and praise the efforts and hard work you have put into your manuscript.

Understanding the fear many authors face when submitting their pride and joy to agents, publsihers and even editors A Bookish Delight aims to provide fiction authors constructive feedback in a kind and sensitive manner to help bring the manuscript to life.  It is not my intention to tear your manuscript apart but to assist in making it the best it can be.

FAQs

Can you tell me more about your Beta Reading service?

My Beta Reading service is great if you are on a tight budget or just want a general idea of how your manuscript is faring. I read your manuscript from start to finish taking notes of the areas where your story is lacking or in need of some extra work, as well as the areas that are well written. I then compile my notes into a one to two page summary highlighting both the strengths and weaknesses in you manuscript and offer advice on how to improve it.

What about your Detailed Critique?

The Detailed Critique goes into more detail and gives you a better overview of how your story is coming along. It involves me reading your manuscript from start to finish and highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of your work, page by page, offering advice and suggestions for improvement along the way and praising the strengths.

How does the In Depth Critique work?

The In Depth Critique is the best value. Not only do you get a one to two page summary and detailed critique of each page but I will point out the strengths and weaknesses paragraph by paragraph, line by line (if needed), providing advice and tips on how to strengthen your story and explanations why it works or doesn’t work – this gives you the best insight into how your manuscript is progressing and is the most informative.

Do you read or critique first drafts, partial manuscript or works in progress?

Yes. Absolutely. I find reading and critiquing first drafts, or at least early drafts in the writing process to be beneficial, that way the author can revise any changes they may want to make or fix any errors they repeatedly make early on and set a good foundation for further development of both their novel and their writing. Remember I am here to help you develop your skills as well as perfecting your novel.

If you would like a critique on a partial manuscript or just a few chapters to make sure your story is going in the direction you want it or to trial my service before committing fully, I am happy to do that also for a small fee that will be quoted on request.

Do you revise the manuscript after your critique has been taken into consideration?

While a second pass over or revision is not part of the critiquing services I offer, I will revise your manuscript and give a follow up critique upon request for a smaller fee.

How long does a critique take?

The time frame in which it takes to complete your critique depends on the length of your manuscript, the service you choose and how many other manuscripts I am working on at the time. I will endeavour to get return your critiqued manuscript as soon as humanly possible and will keep you updated with my progress or any issues along the way.

How much does it cost?

How long is a piece of string? It all depends on the service you require, but for a general idea I charge the following.

Beta Reading – 40 cents per A4 page (lines must be double spaced)

Detailed Critique - $1.30 per A4 page (lines must be double spaced)

In Depth Critique - $1.50 per A4 page (double spaced lines)

Revisions, partial manuscripts and samples will quoted on request according to your requirements and dependent upon the work involved.

How do I submit my manuscript?

I will only accept manuscripts in a Microsoft word document as I use the track changes feature to insert comments into your manuscript. Please make sure that it is in 12pt font, Arial or Times New Roman and the lines are doubled spaced.

You can email your manuscript to this address abookishdelight@outlook.com and once payment is received I will send you a confirmation email and am expected start date for commencing your critique should I already be working on another.

How do I make payment?

By PayPal. I find this is the most accepted and trusted form of payment.

Do you accept all types of manuscripts and genres?

No. I accept Fiction novels of all genres. I do not accept childrens books, non-fiction, biography/auto biography etc. If you are unsure whether your manuscript falls into a category I accept, please contact me and I will get back to as soon as possible.

Do you edit as well?

No, I am not an editor, however if I notice any spelling mistakes, missing words or grammatical errors frequently occurring throughout your manuscript I will point them out / fix them for an extra 10 cents per page. Should you chose to take up this option please be wary that it will not replace the work or skills of a professional editor and in no way will make your manuscript publication ready. I strongly recommend hiring an editor once you’ve perfected your story.

Do you have any rights to my manuscript after you’ve read it?

No, absolutely not. The manuscript is 100% yours. You remain the rightful copyright owner. A Bookish Delight will in no way claim ownership or any responsibility for your manuscript and by taking up this service you agree to indemnify me against any and all legal liability, defamation, copyright infringements etc. should any arise regarding your work.

Can you tell me more?

Sure, if you have any other questions or queries please feel free to fill in the contact form and I will respond to you as soon as I can.
